As the adopted son of the exiled Maratha Peshwa, Baji Rao II, Nana Saheb believed he was entitled to a pension from the Company. With her son, Mirza Birjis Qadr, by her side, Begum Hazrat Mahal skillfully navigated the complex web of politics and administration, forging alliances with other rebel leaders and maintaining a delicate balance between diplomacy and defiance. His pension of a lakh of rupees per month failed to assuage his heartbreak, as he spent lavishly, trying to keep the memories of his beloved Lucknow alive.

On 7 June, the rebels brought large calibre guns, and the bombardment of the entrenchment began.
